About the Author
Bruce Tegner was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1929. Both of his parents were professional teachers of judo and jujitsu; they began his formal instruction in the martial arts when Bruce was two years old!

In a field where most individuals concentrate on a narrow specialty, Bruce Tegner's experience was unusual. His education covered many aspects of weaponless fighting of many styles, as well as sword and stick techniques. At the age of 21, after becoming the California state judo champion, he gave up competition to devote himself to research, course development, teaching and teacher-training.

In the U.S. armed forces, Mr. Tegner trained instructors to teach unarmed combat; he taught military police tactics; he coached sport judo teams. Later, he trained actors and devised choreographed fight scenes for movies and television. From 1952-1957 he operated his own school in Hollywood, California. There, he taught men, women, and children of very different abilities. Some students were naturally gifted in the martial arts, while others were blind and disabled.

Recommended for experienced Judoka/Ju-Jitsuka only...

This book features many, many techniques, but it is not intended for the beginner. You won't find much instruction, mostly composed of one series of photo's depicting one technique after another. For the experienced Judoka/Ju-Jitsuka, this book deserves a 4-star rating; for beginners, or those interested in learning more about the art of Ju-Jitsu, this book ranks a 1-star rating. This is NOT a how-to book, nor does it contain discussions of ethics, legal consequences of your actions, nor does it discuss the history of the art much. If you have a few years of Judo/Ju-Jitsu training behind you, this book will be VERY useful in expanding your repertoire. With 10 years experience in Judo and Ju-Jitsu, I find Tegner's books helpful, but sometimes difficult because of his editorial comments. Most of his books are better suited to experienced martial artists, so choose carefully.

Probably the best Bruce Tegner book

Yeah, yeah... I know. It's sort of like claiming to be the best winemaker in Idaho. Still, just about everyone who reads martial arts books has read Tegner, and this is one of his best. It's probably significant that he doesn't appear in the book. The book is, however, rather inexpensive, and does show jujutsu techniques which will work okay (if you can manage to apply them). Tegner was making a fair case for the utility of jujutsu way back when it wasn't fashionable. After all, back then, jujutsu was "old hat" and was often thought of as just another name for judo. So all in all, this book is alright for beginners who want to decide which martial art to pursue. It will give them a slight taste of what stand-up jujutsu looks like. If they wish to delve any deeper, they must look elsewhere.

Excellent for beginners.

I just bought this book and have had an opportunity to put it through its paces. I've found the text to be very readable and instructive. Unlike many martial arts "Manuals" this one doesn't try to shroud the techniques in mystery, or pretend that you can become a black belt just by reading the book. Instead, it presents the material in an easy to read format that accurately describes the action in the photographs. A word of caution though, it reads a bit like a text book and the smallish black and white photos sometimes make it hard to see exactly what's going on. Overall, it is an excellent introduction to the art of ju jitsu for those who would like to either explore the martial arts, or experienced stylists who wish to expand their knowledge.

Beautiful, Informative . . .

This is the ultimate book for any fan of James Cameron, movie junkies, or the movie "Titanic" to own. As a fan of all three, I absolutely cherish this book. It contains vivid photographs, the entire screenplay--including highlights of scenes cut from the script, scenes filmed but cut from the final production, and scenes and lines added to the movie that weren't even in the script.
For instance, the script's original ending is entirely different than the ending in the movie, but if you want to know, you have to buy the book. Originally, Fabrizio's death scene was different as well, and there was a scene cut from the movie of him saying goodbye to his girlfriend Helga. The book includes pictures of most of these scenes.
The book also contains commentary about certain aspects of the over-all production of the film. It's a very fascinating book that any fan of the movie will adore. It deserves 5+ stars, in my opinion.

'Titanic : James Cameron's Illustrated Screenplay' is an excellent book! A must-have for any movie buff, Titanic fan, etc. The information and reference material in this book is wondorous! You get the *entire* script, even the deleted scenes, with many little notes, additions, rewrittem scenes, explainations, an extensive and exclusive interview with James Cameron, and over three hundred pictures, most of which are very original and not often printed! The appearance of this book makes it very desirable and collectible! The cover is beautiful and made from quality paper. The text, fonts, colors, and pictures inside this book set the mood and make this book very unique and precious. Buy this book, it's a must-have!!!!

Best Book for fans of the Movie!

If you are a fan of the movie "Titanic", I would have to say that you would be crazy not to own this screenplay! It's illustrated with tons of pictures from the movie, which alone would be worth it. But it also shows deleted scenes and lines that weren't in the final cut for the movie. I had a great time, looking through the book and finding all the things that were different from the movie! It also gives good information on behind-the-scenes action, even about ad-libs the actors had. You would be surprised at what they were! I found this book to be even better than "James Cameron's Titanic" even though that was good, also. But if your a true fan, this should definately be a book in your collection!

Excellent read

I received this book as a gift some years ago. I am a jazz fan (wannabe trad jazz banjo player), also classical, Americana, et al.; anything that is played with skill, intelligence and passion. This book is very well written and provides insight into the amazing lives of two of our many unheralded jazz virtuosos. I have read it more than once and taken their lessons on life and music to heart the best that my abilities allow. A very good read for anyone with a strong interest in the history of jazz and more broadly in music and life.

Well worth reading

I knew about Willie Ruff from the last chapter of this book when it appeared in the New Yorker. The rest of the book is quite up to that standard. Reading this book helped me listen better to Willie and Dwike and gave me some insight into their experience.

The Jazzmen Wailed and Everyone Cried

"Willie and Dwike" has a cherished spot on my bookshelf for a number of reasons. I like jazz and it's an extremely well written book from one of my favorite authors (William Zinsser) about a wonderful jazz duo. Unfortunately, Dwike Mitchell passed away this month (April 2013) leaving a definite void in the musical landscape I enjoy. When "Willie and Dwike" was first published in 1984, it was glowingly reviewed by Edwin Wilson in the Wall Street Journal under the headline "The Jazzmen Wailed and Everyone Cried". The review centered around three musical pieces performed by Willie Ruff and Dwike Mitchell at a publisher's party to celebrate the book's release.

Here's an excerpt of that review: "For their finale the two men played a medley from "Porgy and Bess." When they reached "I Love You, Porgy," I felt my eyes fill with tears. The lyrical beauty of Gershwin's melody, the resonance and purity of Mr. Ruff's French horn and the delicate, mystical quality of Mr. Mitchell's piano affected me in a way I was not prepared for. When they finished playing, I discovered that almost everyone present had been affected in the same way. The publishing official, who previously had spoken perfunctorily stood to thank the musicians but his voice broke and he said simply that he could not remember when he'd last been moved in this way. People were astonished not only that they had been deeply touched but that it had happened so quickly and in so unlikely and unpromising a place.
The one person who was not surprised was the author, Mr. Zinsser. Since he first met Messrs. Ruff and Mitchell at Yale in 1973, Mr. Zinsser has followed their careers and traveled with them on a number of their tours. Wherever he saw them play - for homefolks in Muscle Shoals, Ala., for employees at the John Deere headquarters outside Moline, Ill., or for a group of restrained, bewildered music students at the Shanghai Conservatory in China - Mr. Zinsser observed their uncanny ability to communicate with audiences."

If that doesn't make you want to read this book, I'll eat my pork pie hat.
