Mona’s search for Mia’s murderer becomes a quest for identity, love, and meaning. She is guided along the way by Grumps and her dead Grandmother, Bilki, whose spirit speaks to her in moments of need. Mona’s amazing journey is enriched by Native American traditions, a passion for music and art, and her growing realization that to achieve what is most important in her life, she must sacrifice what she most loves. Mona Lisa LaPierre's (10) academic parents are off to Russia for research (18), leaving Mona behind in a cabin deep in the woods of New England with her crotchety Mohegan Indian (8) grandfather whom she barely knows (19). There is no electricity (45), her grandfather seems able to communicate with bears (51), and the lines between this world and the world of spirits are blurry to say the least. Mona passes the time wailing the blues on her trusty guitar Rosalita (14). As she bonds with her grandfather, she also begins to connect more deeply with the natural world and with both sides of her Native American heritage, Mohegan and Abenaki (8). This would be more than enough to process, both for Mona and for readers, but this summer after high school is also filled with a cold case murder mystery, budding romance, love triangles, dysfunctional parents, family secrets, death, and supernatural occurrences. Though ambitious and inclusive of voices underrepresented in teen literature, this novel regrettably fails to strike the right chord. Rather than weaving together in a cohesive story, the various plot points and surprise turns are heaped upon one another at an inconsistent pace, and the result feels cluttered and forced. Too many ideas and not enough focus unfortunately diminish what could have been a unique and much needed novel exploring the lives of contemporary Native American teens. When she discovers he is the son of the dead girl that has been urging her to bring her killer to justice, Mona becomes obsessed with the case. And she might just be falling for Del.~~~Danger lurks in the woods and in unlikely places that would normally be considered safe. Mona has angered people by uncovering long buried secrets. The deeper she digs the more help she needs from Grumps and her extended Native American family.~~~Zobel created one of the most memorable characters I’ve read about in a long time. Mona develops from a snarky teen to a mature young woman over the course of this novel but she still has rough edges. She learns about herself while digging into her family’s history and culture.~~~This Young Adult Mystery was so much more than a “whodunit”. The mystery of the murder developed along with the characters, making Zobel’s novel fast paced and interesting. I loved the rich history and tradition that I learned along with Mona. This is the first book in a trilogy, and I can’t wait to read the next two books. (Writeknit)

Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel spent her childhood learning ancient stories and traditions from her Mohegan tribal elders. She currently serves as the Medicine Woman for the Mohegans and writes fiction and non-fiction about the extraordinary real world of the Native Americans of New England.

Masterful Mystery

Good Reading

Wabanaki Blues is an entertaining introduction to what I think will be an interesting series. It’s part coming of age and discovering who you are and where you’ve come from sort of book, and part mystery.
The story is told in the first person through the main character Mona Lisa LaPierre, who is also known as the girl who never smiles. At the beginning of the story it’s easy to see why. She seems somewhat of a tortured soul whose parents leave her with her grandfather for the summer. What starts off as a negative thing for Mona, it does in fact become a turning point for her. It’s through her adventure there that she grows as a person, and the author did a wonderful job allowing us to be part of Mona’s journey.
I really enjoyed learning about all the Native American traditions that the author weaved into the story. The dialogue is natural sounding and entertaining. One of my favorite characters in this story was Grumps, Mona’s grandfather. He too seemed to change and evolve over the span of this story.
The pacing is fast and you find yourself turning the pages to find out what happens next. The mystery is draws you more as the story progresses.
Overall, it’s a fine debut and I think young adults who are looking for something besides the usual dystopia novels, would find this a good pick.

Love the idea, misses a little in delivery

When Mona's parents announce they'll be heading to Russia to study bears, Mona is shocked to learn she'll be spending the time with her granfather in remote New England woods. She is forced to miss graduation and the chance to get her crush, Beetle, to notice her before they part.
Mona, the child of both Mohegan and Abenaki tribes, has a passion for blues. This passion and the voice of her grandmother Bilki keep her grounded as she goes on a journey to learn the truth about a young woman's disappearance and in reality, about herself.
Zobel, being Native American herself, really paid tribute to her heritage. Instead of watering down Native traditions and stories, they took forefront in this novel. Zobel shares her traditions and writes them with such reverence and respect.
I REALLY wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, too many story lines and crossing details made it hard to keep the different parts of the story straight. It's a genuine coming of age story told in an uncoventional way, which I appreciate. It just became very complex in a way that wasn't able to keep me engaged. Complex in the name of suspense is fantastic. This just fell short of that for me.
