A corrected reprint.

According the the preface, Birlin has made no substantive changes to the previous edition. Rather, she corrected errors and added a previously unpublished and still incomplete essay on biblical simile by Lida Knorina. Thus, if you own the original, you need to decide if the essay on simile is worth the full cover price.

However, if you don't own the first edition, do buy her work; it is excellent. She covers all the various types of biblical parallelism in depth using Hebrew examples with English translations. Although I read the first edition before I knew Hebrew, I would recommend having at least a rudimentary understanding of Hebrew before tackling this work. I had a hard time understanding morphological, lexical, and phonological parallelism without basic Hebrew skills. If you enjoy this work you may also want to read Robert Alter's less technical book The Art of Biblical Poetry.

I have deducted one star because the book was corrected not revised.

excellent introduction to biblical parallelism

Adele Berlin describes the various types of biblical parallelism found throughout the Hebrew Bible. She begins with a general survey of the role of parallelism in poetry including a very brief look at the history of the study of parallelism in biblical studies that includes the terminology used to described the various types of parallelism throughout this history. In this initial chapter she catalogs the function of poetry within language, agrees with the identification of parallelism as one of the two key elements of poetry, terseness being the other, and introduces the location of parallelism in linguistic studies.

In the rest of the book she examines the linguistic study of parallelism broken down into the following aspects: the grammatical aspect, the lexical and semantic aspects, and the phonological aspect. She does recognize that grammatical and semantic parallelisms tend to co-occur because of the psychological nexus between structure and meaning (22) and points out that parallelism, juxtaposition and collocation are all part of the same phenomenon.

Under the grammatical aspect, she considers first morphological parallelism and second syntactic parallelism recognizing the role of equivalence and contrast in each. Under the lexical and semantic aspects, she examines the use of word pairs to create parallelism and the semantic relationship between lines. Finally with the phonological aspect, she mirrors the use of words pairs in lexical parallelism with the use of sound pairs in phonological parallelism and also the phonological equivalence of parallel lines.

In the last chapter she turns the discussion to the consideration of the fact that the four aspects of language mentioned above - grammatical, lexical, semantic, and phonological - usually occur in combination and that one should expect to discover biblical parallelism to also operate simultaneously in a combination of these aspects. She discusses the importance of the perceptibility and the effect of parallelism isolating the elements that make it perceptible and those which make it effective.

Berlin's book is a great study of biblical parallelism. The study of biblical parallelism often stops at lexical and semantic parallelism, so her incorporation of grammatical and phonological parallelism catches the reader off guard, yet her presentation rewards the reader with the senses of intellectual fascination and pleasure. Her writing style is not too difficult for a newcomer to the field to swiftly understand the subject, but soon plunges to a deep understanding of the use of this poetic device. She induces comprehension of her ideas by immediately offering numerous examples from the Hebrew Scriptures to demonstrate what she has just explained. She does this with each category and provides many examples of prevalent patterns - aabb, abab or abba - that one should expect to find in parallel components.

She writes with clarity so that one is able to follow her thought pattern with ease and she defines new terminology appropriately so that one stays in the flow of her idea. As a result, a good working knowledge of the Hebrew language and general linguistics is not necessary, though it would be helpful. Some knowledge of the works of Robert Alter, James Kugel, Stephen Geller, Michael O'Connor, Jacques Derrida, Lida Knorina, and Rolf A. Jacobson would definitely aid in understanding. That being said, it is a delight to read through Hebrew example after example that she has provided in order to detect the patterns that she proposes that are very often lost in translation. This effort has brought the reviewer to a better appreciation of Hebrew poetry. The challenge remains to apply the skills learned from Berlin to the remaining Hebrew texts, especially regarding phonological parallelism.

She accomplishes the purpose of her book, which is to not "reduce parallelism to a simple linguistic formula, but rather to show the enormous linguistic complexity of parallelism" (129) in a way that honors others in her field but which demonstrates originality. One criticism is that since the book is a virtual reprint of her 1985 version, there is no sense of where the field moved during twenty-three year interim until this version. It would have been interesting to see the growth of the field in the areas that must have seemed fresh in 1985. The addition of Knorina's article at the end of the book is honorable and the article is itself very interesting. This book is a must read for anyone wanting to have a better grasp on Hebrew poetry.

Her book has a lot of good critiques that should temper the readiness of many biblicists ...

This book presents a very comprehensive and helpful system for describing parallelisms and the effect of parallelisms. Berlin draws from psycholinguistic theory and lots of biblical examples to make her argument. Her book has a lot of good critiques that should temper the readiness of many biblicists to "emend" the text in order to make the lines in a parallelism more parallel.

However, she does not fully develop her explanations of the biblical example she uses for her demonstrations. While the sheer number of examples she provides would make it impossible to go into depth for each one, sometimes her explanations are so brief that I get the impression that she's either not saying everything she means to or she's saying something so obvious that I'm not sure why she's pointing it out in the first place.

Overall, good book, though not totally clear at times. A valuable work for anyone studying the biblical text seriously today.

Best possible practice test

I purchased this practice test for my son, who had not done well on the actual test the year before. As he worked his way through this practice test, he said it was "fun," which I did not expect! But then he explained that the year before, in the actual test, he was just surprised and confused by some of the questions, and what they were asking him to solve. He had never taken a test like that before, and I suspect a great deal of time was wasted just figuring out the format.

So this practice test was an excellent way to make sure the actual test measured my child's ability, and not his familiarity with question types. It seems to me that any valid test should accurately check a child's cognitive skill, not their ability to understand a testing format! Other tests, such as the ISEE entrance exam for private schools, provide extensive practice materials and questions (a 75 page booklet, if memory serves!). I fail to understand why this test does not.

Anyway, thank fully Mercer Publishing exists. That way my son could focus on solving the actual test problems during the test, and using his brain. It also helped him simply be more relaxed and comfortable during the actual test. Simple neurology shows us that when humans are stressed, our cerebral cortex actually shuts down, as the more "fight or flight" brain stem takes over and floods our body with adrenalin, etc.

My son did well on the test, and he's been in the "gifted" program every since -- and rocking it. Thank you, Mercer Publishing!

This is a must have before the test

My daughter was totally confused when she first took the exam. The teacher would not give any instruction, and only asked her and other students to 'read again'. After she finished this book, she felt very confident for the test next year.
My only complain was the price tag. However, I asked my daughter to take care of the book, and I sold it. So my 'real' cost was about $10. Absolutely worth it.

Btw, there is another book for the same level (test 1), you can find it in 'similar products'. One of books is harder in the verbal part, the other is harder in the figure part.

Helped my son feel more confident!

This really helped my son feel ready to take his gifted testing. It would have been nice if the book came with a bubble sheet but I got one from the publisher. Same format as the first book but different questions for extra help. If you only want a little but of practice one book would suffice!

Buy this book FIRST! Best ocean voyaging preparation manual

To sufficiently prepare for, what we plan will be at least five years of ocean voyaging, we have purchased and read more than 20 books, in addition to subscribing to Seven Seas Crusing Association and reading greater than fifty online articles, user forums, blogs and websites. The Voyager's Handbook, is by far, the single best resource for preparing to sell out and sail off. The book is extremely well organized and conveniently offers topic specific browsing or cover-to-cover reading. We each read the book, with great appreciation, the first week it arrived. My husband and I have raced sailboats and cruised both sail and power boats for over twenty-five years. We have cruised and raced offshore. We have owned thirty boats. I mention this only to demonstrate that we are experienced boaters. We were thrilled at the quality and scope of this publication. We were seeking a comprehensive checklist/action plan and gained much more. We would have saved countless hours and over $500 if we would have found this book first. Neither of us know the author or anyone financially benefiting from the sale of this publication. We took the time to write only to help others prepare more efficiently, as we have benefited from the comments of both readers'and professional reviewers.

WHAT A MASTERPIECE!!!!!

First of all, I am not a child of 13, this was the only space I could find to write this review. As a matter of fact, I am a grandmother and I have recently return from a two year, double handed, Atlantic circle. I have sailed all my life.

Beth Leonard has produced the most valuable book I have ever seen for cruisers of any level. I wish I could give it to everyone I've met along my voyages. I can't think of anyone who would not benefit. Certainly not a frilly coffee table item, instead, something of real value. An encyclopedia of research and a dedicated documentation of pratical information.

About the Author
Madan Mehta, B.Arch., M.Bdg.Sc., Ph.D., P.E., is a faculty member at the School of Architecture, University of Texas at Arlington, and teaches courses in construction and structures. He was previously the Director of the Architectural Engineering Program at King Fahd University, Saudi Arabia. A licensed professional engineer (Texas), Fellow of the Institute of Architects (India), and Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, he has worked in India, Australia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. With academic credentials in both architecture and engineering, he ran a comprehensive architecture/engineering practice while working as a faculty member at the Delhi School of Architecture, and he worked for a large general contractor in the United States during a leave of absence. He is the author of several full-length books and monographs on building construction, architectural structures, and architectural engineering.

 

Walter R. Scarborough, CSI, SCIP, AIA, is Vice President and Regional Manager for Hall Building Information Group, LLC.  He is a specifications consultant and registered architect (Texas) with over 35 years of comprehensive technical architectural experience in specifications, document production, and construction contract administration.  He has produced documents and administered construction for a large number and variety of building types. Previously the Director of Specifications for 10 years for one of the largest architectural firms in the world, he was responsible for building sciences research, manager of a department of specifiers, and master specification development and maintenance, in addition to being the specifier for major healthcare, sports, detention, municipal, and commercial projects, some valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars.  He is active in the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) at the local level (past president, secretary, and technical director) and national level (Education Committee and Practice Guide Task team), holds several CSI certifications, is Chairman of the Institute’s Education Committee, was awarded CSI’s prestigious J. Norman Hunter Memorial Award for advancing building sciences and specifications, and is the revision author for CSI’s Project Delivery Practice Guide and its associated education program.

 

Diane Armpriest, M.L.A., M. Arch., is Associate Professor and Chair, Faculty of Architecture and Interior Design, College of Art and Architecture, University of Idaho. Before joining the faculty in 2001, she worked as an architectural project manager, and as a project developer and construction manager for neighborhood nonprofit housing providers. Her teaching and research interests include the pedagogy of architectural building construction technology, the expression of structure and materials in Northwest regional architecture, and the relationship between building and site. Previously, she was Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Cincinnati. Highlights of her work there include research in resource-efficient design and construction and working with students on design-build projects.

Great book on materials

So far I love this book. I am currently taking a heavy construction methods class. This book is also being used for light construction(residential) class at my institution as well.

I am about half way through the course so I have not read the whole book. But so far, it's an easy read with lots of info. I love the side bars.They contain additional information about subject being discussed in that particular section. The questions at the end of each chapter are some what challenging. They are in sequential order so you don't have to look all over the chapter to find the answers. I have had books that quiz you on info that even isn't in the material being covered in that particular chapter. Some may think I am being silly but I believe one should be challenged to learn the material not be tested on how effectively you can comb through hundreds of pages. There is a ton of info in this text.

I also like the fact that it discusses sustainable construction in every chapter. In each section it explains how the material being discussed in the chapter pertains to sustainable practices. Being a LEED AP(US Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional), I believe it is extremely important that today's construction professionals embrace and fully understand sustainability as it pertains to construction. So called "green building" is quickly becoming a standard practice in the US and throughout the developed world.

This is a great text book. I definitely plan on keeping it for reference material as I continue my career.I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning the basics about construction materials and methods.

Excellent textbook...frustrating for Kindle

As a student studying Construction Management, I found this to be a terrific textbook. The diagrams and picture explanations I found to be very helpful, and there is a plethora of helpful information.

My one complaint has nothing to do with the content of the book however. My biggest frustration with this textbook had to do with the kindle experience. First of all, this did work fine on my Kindle HD, albeit with a small screen, it was difficult to pan around a large textbook page. My options for viewing it on a computer were limited because it cannot be viewed on the kindle cloud reader for viewing on web browser and it is not available for viewing on kindle for windows 8. So if you have a new laptop or computer and want to view the content on a bigger screen than a kindle you are out of luck. That needs to change. Please allow me to read this on a windows 8 device.

Does a pretty good job at keeping up with the new book that came out. I'm in a class that uses the newest version of this book and with a few new illustrations and color images, there isn't much difference.

About the Author
Paul R. Epstein, MD, MPH, (1943–2011) was Associate Director of the Center for Health and Global Environment at Harvard Medical School and a medical doctor trained in tropical health. He contributed to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Dan Ferber is a contributing correspondent for Science magazine. His feature articles have appeared in many publications, including Popular Science, Audubon, and Nature Conservancy.

Informative Book!

Changing Planet, Changing Health by Paul R. Epstein, MD, and Dan Ferber

"Changing Planet, Changing Health" is an excellent book about how climate change harms our health now , and how it will devastate us in the future unless we transform society and our global economy. This insightful 368-page book is composed of the following thirteen chapters: 1. Mozambique, 2. The Mosquito's Bite, 3. Sobering Predictions, 4. Every Breath You Take, 5. Harvest Trouble, 6. Sea Change, 7. Forests in Trouble, 8. Storms and Sickness, 9. The Ailing Earth, 10. Gaining Green by Going Green, 11. Healthy Solutions, 12. Of Rice and Tractors, and 13. Rewriting the Rules.

Positives:
1. A comprehensive topic that was well researched.
2. Engaging prose and accessible for the masses.
3. Written with passion and conviction this book reads like a well crafted novel.
4. The authors rely on sound science and their love for this planet to share some very important information.
5. Great use of charts, illustrations and even great photos that further engages the reader into the topics of the book.
6. This great book emphasizes the direct impact climate change has on our species, namely on our health.
7. Great wisdom throughout this book.
8. Great explanation of systems theory, and how it plays a vital role in addressing global issues.
9. The fascinating story of cholera researcher Rita Colwell. Kudos to her!
10. The importance of rain forests.
11. A medical look at illnesses, epidemics and their relation to climate change. Great stuff!
12. A historical look at the term greenhouse effect.
13. So how do humans contribute to climate change? Find out in a comprehensive manner.

15. So many great examples. The authors do a wonderful job of taking the reader to different parts of the world like Mozambique and Honduras. They proceed to explain with a luxury of details how climate change impacts their environments and how illnesses arise as a result of it.
16. How big oil (as I like to call them) and their money purposely confuse the public by creating a global warning controversy. Global warmer deniers.

In summary, what an excellent and informative book. Insightful, educational and inspirational. This book's unique perspective on health was a much needed contribution to climate change and much thanks go out to these wonderful people for writing such a great book. Get this book, I highly recommend it!

Deeply informative, highly readable

What a revelatory book this was. I knew about some of the ways in which climate change threatens human health and safety, but had no idea of the breadth and scope of those dangers, or of the ways in which some are interconnected. Epstein and Ferber paint an impressively--if frighteningly--detailed picture of the health menace that our planet's inarguably changing climate poses. And somehow they transform this dauntingly complex material into something that is a pleasure to read, with the tangible human dimensions of the problems (and some solutions) evident on almost every page, from a Kenyan mother's desperate fight to rescue her deathly ill daughter from malaria contracted in a region once deemed "malaria-free," to the daily grind of a graduate student whose work in a Midwestern experimental soybean field aims to address the question of whether and how, in the face of increasing CO2 levels, we will be able to grow enough food to feed the planet. But Epstein and Ferber don't just present problems and then leave us with the depressing sense that we've long since passed our chance for redemption. Although they're clear that modern wants and needs have brought us to a dangerous precipice ("Again and again, we want too much, waste too much, and fail to consider the consequences," they write), they also propose thought-provoking solutions which I only hope will capture both the public's and the policy makers' serious attention.

Compelling, Convincing, Constructive

Epstein and Ferber have done a masterful job of connecting the dots between climate change and health, from a malaria epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, to airborne soot in Harlem where doctors at a local hospital care for asthma patients. I had an idea that climate change can harm health but had no clue how seemingly unrelated events from day-to-day choices combine to harm our environment and thus our health. The book is 299 pages, and includes an epilogue to last year's Deepwater Horizon explosion. It reads like an adventure story packed with researchers chasing epidemics and with determined citizens looking for ways to reduce their dependence on electricity. One of the sections that struck me most was the chapter on "Storms and Sickness". The Midwest has had more than its share of tornados this year. After a tornado touched down one half mile from our property a few days ago, I went back and reread this section trying to imagine how our lives would have changed if the trajectory of those horrific winds had shifted just slightly. People everywhere live with weather extremes. Droughts, hurricanes, and floods leave destruction in their wake and also unseen but powerful pathogens in raw sewage, in drinking water that needs to be boiled. Page after page of such information could leave the reader feeling helpless and hopeless but the authors close the book by fully outlining a clear and hopeful way forward in which all of us can join. Epstein and Ferber, through eloquent writing, compelling stories, and prodigious reporting bring both an immediacy and urgency to an issue critical to our continued existence.
