About the Author

Phil Mickelson followed an outstanding amateur career with a brilliant assault on the PGA Tour, compiling 36 PGA Tour victories by 2009 (second among active players), including three major championships: the Masters Tournament in 2004 and 2006 and the PGA Championship in 2005. He has played on seven U.S. Ryder Cup teams and seven U.S. Presidents Cup teams. Mickelson is in the prime of his career, and his short game is without peer in golf today.

Outstanding. This can help anyone with the short game

I bought this for my wife, who had asked for it, but we were soon competing to read it. I have read it cover to cover a half dozen times and in parts many more times. It is on my bed table, competing with several other books, and I often read it for 15-20 minutes before going to sleep. It often makes the trip to the breakfast room table on weekends. In short, it is not a book to read once and put on the shelf.

As other reviewers have noted, the key concept is the very sensible hinge and hold method, but it also emphasizes other sound principles, including accelerating through the ball and properly using bounce of the club. Phil demonstrates that in most cases, it is not necessary to make a perfect contact with the ball to have a good stroke, and he tells how to give yourself a margin for error.

He describes the many variations in pitching and chipping, including ball position in your stance, ball trajectory, choice of club (with a strong recommendation to learn to hit many different kinds of shots with a 60 degree wedge rather than using many different clubs for different situations).

This book (rather, the careful study and digestion of it) have helped me enormously. I have practiced the principles in the book, and I am now much more confident when I encounter a short shot, knowing that I understand the principles that apply to various situations and that I know what to do, based on the sound principles set forth in Phil Mickelson's book.

An extra bonus was that Phil is such an appealing character, and I couldn't help but enjoying his descriptions of his memorable shots.

One modest suggestion for a second edition: the photography in the book is great, but a good illustrator could also add illustrations to show things like contact of clubhead with ball and exact trajectory of swing in various situations.

In short, this is a great golf book, and it merits its space on my bookshelf with the only two other golf books that I own, namely, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons and Jack Nicklaus's Golf My Way. Study this book and apply it to your game. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent Short Game Guide

This book is valuable because it has excellent pictures combined with descriptions of the pictured technique. There are points here for everyone but readers should keep in mind that Phil Mickelson is a professional golfer who has developed and honed his technique through now a couple decades of play and surely thousands of hours of practice. Interestingly, the book criticizes (indirectly) the short game system taught by Dave Pelz, who has served as Mickelson's short game strategy coach for a few years now. Avid golfers will find this useful.

Phil Can Help Your Short Game

Phil approaches the short game in a relaxed and sensible manner. The key takeaway from the book is the "hinge and hold" method. You'll find him using it in chipping, pitching, sand play,.... It's a worthwhile read. I've benefited from it greatly.

this book was a light in the darkness for me!

I first encountered Laurel, Carol et al. in 1985, after reading and being impressed by Diet For A Small Planet but feeling constrained by the narrowness of protein complementarity as it was then understood. I had been told by my doctor to lose the fifty pounds I had gained with my first pregnancy or she wouldn't be around to help me with a second one. A vegetarian friend suggested I try changing the way our family ate. Since I did then and still do love to cook, I was ready and willing to make whatever changes might be necessary. Laurel's Kitchen was a light in the darkness for me. The recipes were fun to make and best of all, they tasted great. My formerly meat and potatoes or nothing Irishman husband took to our new way of eating with real enjoyment. I took great heart from the philosophical musings that began the book and were interspersed with the recipes. When the second edition came out, in 1986, I was fifty pounds lighter and beginning a pregnancy as a well-nourished lacto-ovo vegetarian. My 11 pound son's birth left me two pounds lighter than I had been at his conception. I have gone through 3 copies of the 1986 edition, and have memorized (with our own personal modifications) all our favorite recipes, which have become family classics. I have never regained the weight I lost fourteen years ago and am in my twenty-fifth year of teaching high school history. My husband and our two teen-agers are healthy, slim and energetic. My daughter, at 16, takes a lot of static from well-meaning "friends" about her vegetarian diet, but she remains committed but never censorious of others' eating habits. We are happy with our choice and eternally grateful for the wit, wisdom and just plain good eating to be found in Laurel's Kitchen. As Carol states,"Laurel didn't believe just in cooking vegetarian...it had to taste good."

My Family Used This book Even When We Weren't Vegetarians

This book really has in-depth information on nutrition that's good for any family. In the nutrition section, vegetables and fruits are listed along with the vitamins they contain. This way, you can plan better on getting vitamins in your meals. Laurel talks about how by eating less meat protein, we absorb vitamins in our fruits and vegetables easier. This makes it easier for the vegan and vegetarian can meet al their health needs. The bread recipes are easy as (forgive me!) rice crispies, but the results are often artisan breads because of their fine, simple ingredients. Try the english muffins, pumpernickel bread, whole wheat french, the black bread and my favorite, oatmeal. My husband loves the tamale pie. The vegetarian shepherd's pie is another staple. I also love the minestrone soup, the baked eggplant parmesan ( you can use any crumbs, not just crackers!) and stuffed peppers. I like the way the menus are layed out. It makes it easy when you first start out. It's also a good book for introducing yourself to the concept of whole foods and getting away from packaged foods if you haven't already. They are very strict about sugar when they talk about nutrition in this book, which makes alot of the recipes great for diabetics. However, it's a little too strict at times, if you're not a diabetic since as the main author states her belief is that, "sugar is sugar is sugar." There are too many important enzymes in fruit to worry so much about the sugar! So much of the information is in depth, and that's what makes this book a standby for me. There are instructions on how to make yogurt at home, also soybean milk. There is eomthing really wholesome about the book, which I find appealing as well. Well-put together and organized I definitley suggest this book for your cookbook and nutrition library.

The most worn-out of my 100+ cookbooks.

Friends gave this cookbook to my husband and me as a wedding present in 1987, and it's been my all-purpose cookbook since then. We are not vegetarians, but Laurel, Carol, and Brian taught us to enjoy vegetarian meals. This is the book that gave me confidence in the kitchen and showed me how to make delicious, low-fat meals. The nutritional tables in the back are wonderful -- there's one for basic foods and one that gives detailed nutritional information for each recipe in the book. My favorites (the ones I return to again and again): Hungarian Noodles, Lazy Pirogi, Sandy's Macaroni, Good Shepherd's Pie, Helen's Polenta with Eggplant, Tamale Pie, Black-eyed Peas Virginia Style, Black Bean Soup, Diane's Apple Crisp, Gingerbread, Oatmeal School Cookies. I can't think of a recipe from this book that I didn't enjoy. Don't have a copy of this book? Get one. If I could just find tape strong enough to keep the cover on mine!

About the Author
Misty E. Vermaat has more than 25 years of experience in the field of computer and information technology. In addition to consulting in the field, she was an Associate Professor at Purdue University Calumet, teaching or developing Microsoft Office, computer concepts, database management, systems analysis and design, and programming courses. Since 1990, Ms. Vermaat has led the development of the Shelly Cashman Series and has written or co-authored numerous Series textbooks, including many editions of DISCOVERING COMPUTERS, DISCOVERING COMPUTERS FUNDAMENTALS, and Microsoft Word books.

I was not pleased with the appearance of the book

When I received the book it looked as if water was poured onto the book. The cover and all pages are wrinkled. I was not pleased with the appearance of the book.

About the Author
Charis E. Kubrin is Associate Professor of Criminology, Law and Society at the University of California, Irvine, and coeditor of Punishing Immigrants: Policy, Politics, and Injustice (2012) and Crime: Readings (2007), now in its third edition. Thomas D. Stucky is Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), Indiana University-Purdue University, and author of Urban Politics, Crime Rates, and Police Strength (2005). They are coauthors of Researching Theories of Crime and Deviance (2008), with Marvin D. Krohn.
