Bad Friday: The Great & Terrible 1964 Alaska Earthquake, by Lew Freedman

When a strong shake is felt in Alaska today, a half-century later, many who lived through the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake still become tense as they count the seconds. How long will this one last? None who were there can forget the strongest earthquake ever recorded in North America -- a destructive force that in some places shook the ground for five and a half minutes, wreaking death and destruction and setting off powerful tsunamis. In BAD FRIDAY, survivors share their personal stories -- the Seward family that rode out a tsunami on the roof of a house torn off its foundations and carried away ... widespread early fears that the Russians had dropped an atomic bomb ... the fright of stunned shoppers in a furniture store where chandeliers hanging by chains swung back and forth so violently they crashed into the ceiling and shattered ... the Anchorage homes carried away in a massive landslide ... and the 441-foot cargo ship in Valdez that was tossed thirty feet into the air and knocked over on its side on dry land before powerful forces righted it again back in the bay.

interesting History
By Dot Rudy
I found this book very interesting and I came to understand more on earthquakes.
I remember reading of this quake in my local town newspaper (too poor for TV) wish I still did not have one most of the time.
Anyway, reading all the destruction and how people afterwards came together with such positive attitudes of "it could have been
worse"and looked to start rebuilding.
I also never knew Alaska was so prone to earthquakes even surpassing California!
I highly recommend this natural disaster history you will learn a lot of Alaska

Great read...definitely recommend
By troutguy
This is a really thorough and well written account of a remarkable natural disaster. Many first hand accounts make this a compelling read. I've travelled south from anchorage on numerous occasions past a large field of dead trees. I always thought the trees were killed by fire. I was shocked to learn the tsunami after the quake wiped them out.

some interesting tales
By Ye Olde
I have long wondered what that day have might have like. And after a visit to Anchorage during the 50th anniversary, my interest had grown. This book gave me a clear idea of what those people had experienced. It was an interesting read.

Former Navy Seal Jake Javolyn, a dive boat operator by profession and part-time smuggler by necessity, has come to Haiti to fulfill a solemn promise made to a comrade-in-arms killed in the mountains of Tora Bora. Hiring his boat out to a renowned marine zoologist, he sets course for Navassa Island only to stumble across a beautiful girl in the open sea. Encircled by a pod of six white dolphins, the girl is found riding a seventh much larger but similar creature. Javolyn quickly discovers the girl has extraordinary powers, and her companions are unlike any sea mammals he has ever encountered. Shortly thereafter, they lead him to a hidden cove teeming with life where fantastic riches abound beneath calm waters, upon which he is plunged into a world of the supernatural and confrontation with iniquitous forces bent on vengeance and the capture of nature’s most recent miracles.
Evil has asserted itself in the form of a most unlikely alliance, one which Javolyn finds himself pitted against. A sadistic colonel seeks to take control of Haiti by forging an unholy partnership with a vicious drug ring and Islamic terrorists. In a race against time, Javolyn and the girl must stop an insidious plot aimed at obtaining a catastrophic weapon lying in the ocean depths near Navassa Island.
The Girl Who Rode Dolphins is a one of a kind nail-biting adventure that will leave readers spellbound and enthralled with its superb mix of intense action and mysticism.

A Great Backdrop For An Ongoing Saga
By XtraSkeptic
This volume is stimulating in many ways. From Javolyn's honor and heroism, to the tender-caring, righteous, and naive nature of Destiny each character is carefully honed in each chapter. A multitude of sub-plots visited and re-visited until they are fully developed and merging into the climactic end at the last chapter. Full of military, scuba, engineering, technical gadgetry jargon to expand the mind of the uninformed and make those in such fields feel at home. It is a story of good verses evil with many action sequences and close calls reminisce of agent 007. It has a little of everything (action, romance, andventure, geography, history, etc. too much to list). At 711pgs completing the read is an accomplishment. However, the saga proves to be rewarding in the end. I hope Mr. Ganas will continue the work of the dolphins in developing their colony by supplementing what seems to be a base volume with shorter follow-up volumes to keep us abreast of how these intelligent creatures fair in their desire to change the hearts of a multitude no man can number.

Though she dreams of adventure, Gabrielle—a peasant girl—is given only a cat for her inheritance and is told she must marry, immediately. So when the cat, Puss, offers her a life of excitement in exchange for a pair of boots, Gabrielle jumps at the opportunity. Through Puss’s cunning and Gabrielle’s good deeds, they become celebrated heroes in small villages across the country.

Their adventurous life is complicated by Prince Steffen—a handsome prince who has a low opinion of love. He befriends Gabrielle and comes to grudgingly respect Puss as they work together to purge monsters and brigands from the countryside.

Disaster strikes when Steffen realizes his growing feelings for Gabrielle, and Puss and Gabrielle fight the evil ogre who rules the lands of Carabas. Can Gabrielle save Carabas? Will Steffen accept his feelings for her before it is too late?

Not My Favorite, But Still Good
By Lexar
For anyone who (also) didn't read the second book, this is a prologue of sorts to the whole series, as the primary story occurs three-ish years prior to Beauty and the Beast. I guess I'm still a little confused as to that, but I like the story enough to ignore it.

First, this wasn't what I expected, but I'm glad. I ways support gender-bending traditional fairy tales, and Gabrielle is a fun lead, a young woman who is strong when we meet her and only grows stronger. Even though she doesn't like people, she still manages to show them compassion and empathy, and she's hard-working and down-to-Earth. She's sensible, likeable, and well-written. Gabrielle joins the line of kicka$$ heroines from books 1, 4, and 5. (I have not read 2 or 3, so I won't comment on their female leads.)

Puss is the character that I would consider the deuteragonist (which may be good or bad, considering.) He's just as fun to read as Gabrielle, and he provides a strong foil to her character. They highlight each other well, and he's the best cat I've ever read about. Like another reader, I hope to read about him meeting Elle and Severin.

Steffen's presence was weak in the novel. Now, since this was my first encounter with him, perhaps he had more character development in 2. Here though, in terms of presence and importance, Steffen was the fairy tale princess to Gabrielle's hero. He popped up when the plot called for it, but he never moved past slightly arrogant, hot-and-cold Crown Prince. Gabrielle and Puss dominated this book, and Steffen felt more like a flat side character than the love interest. I liked the way the proposal scene went at the end, but the epilogue confused me. Again, maybe reading the second book would really have helped, but it was like, "what do you mean you weren't affectionate, Steffen?"

So while I liked the heroine and her magic cat, this book read as more of an adventure than a romance, probably mostly because Steffen was just never really around. I'd be fine with that, but I think K. M. Shea was still going for a strong romance, not just an adventure.

(Are we getting to that sleeping princess soon? And when are Elle and Severin coming back on page?)

My favorite female character in the series...and the most idiotic romantic interest
By Clare
I've read all the books in the series but the The Wild Swans, and while I really enjoyed the others, I just ended this book with a bitter taste in my mouth. The characters of Gabrielle (her romantic leanings aside, though I admire her heart) and Puss were possibly my favorite in the series, but they were ruined by that debbie downer of a prince, Steffan.

One of the things I particularly liked about the previous books was how the main characters looked past the exterior (even though it's a little tiring that each and every one of them except Belle is "exotic" and "the most beautiful/handsome woman/man"), emphasizing how love is not just a temporary feeling, and something that needs to be constantly worked on. While that was emphasized in this book through dialogue, it wasn't really shown.

For one, the main characters, with limited interaction, fall in love over the space of what, seven action packed days? Secondly, love at first sight nor not, Steffan is an idiot. Although some reviewers complained of his not being such a central part of the book as other romanic interests in the series have been, I was actually glad of this - I thought he was insufferable and immature. I appreciate the fact that the author tried to give him some more human failings than the previous romantic interests, but with the particular failings she gave him, I did not see the connection between him and Gabi that the author kept telling us was there. I kept hoping Gabi would realize what an idiot the prince was and that Puss would turn out to be a man (but not a noble or mage, please!) under a spell, since they actually had a real relationship, and a fun one at that.

I also noticed some problems with stringing the tales together smoothly, particularly with Gabi running off to the ogre the second time right after the conversation with Steffan, and then the very quick and easy solution to the ogre.

So, while I truly enjoyed the characters of Gabi and Puss, the idiocy of Steffan and some tale-stringing problems made me finish this book dissatisfied.

Warning! Spoilers ahead!
By Rhea Anderson
Warning! Spoilers ahead!
Puss in Boots was one of those classic bedtime stories that everybody grew up with in childhood, and, like any fairy tale, there’s a certain challenge in making it stand out from its original counterpart. I’m starting to believe that Ms. Shea could nail it with her eyes closed and a hand tied behind her back. Her writing style is engaging, witty, and seamlessly draws the reader right into the story. The overarching plot of the evil takeover is thoroughly expanded upon in this book and we even get a peek into what happened to Enchanter Everest (whom I’ve determined at this point I don’t wholly trust).
Furthermore, her world building is fascinating and beautiful. I’m always thrilled when I see the fairy tales within fairy tales that pop up in her books. In addition to Puss in Boots and The Six Swans, we have allusions to Hansel and Gretel, The Golden Goose (would that make Steffen the princess who never laughed?), Rumpelstiltskin, and I’m pretty sure there’s even a reference to The Bremen Town Musicians in there! She always manages to throw in as many references as possible, and then some, and I absolutely love it!
Gabi is a delightful main character. I loved the banter between her and “Puss”. Coming from a small town, I can really relate to her wanting to get out, see the world, and have adventures. I was a little disappointed with how much she reminded me of Gemma, but that can be ignored if one focuses a little more on the plot and a little less on the characters themselves.

Toshié: A Story of Village Life in Twentieth-Century Japan, by Simon Partner

Sakaue Toshié was born on August 14, 1925, into a family of tenant farmers and day laborers in the hamlet of Kosugi. The world she entered was one of hard labor, poverty, dirt, disease, and frequent early death. By the 1970s, that rural world had changed almost beyond recognition. Toshié is the story of that extraordinary transformation as witnessed and experienced by Toshié herself. A sweeping social history of the Japanese countryside in its twentieth-century transition from "peasant" to "consumer" society, the book is also a richly textured account of the life of one village woman and her community caught up in the inexorable march of historical events.

Through the lens of Toshié's life, Simon Partner shows us the realities of rural Japanese life during the 1930s depression; daily existence under the wartime regime of "spiritual mobilization"; the land reform and its consequences during occupation; and the rapid emergence of a consumer culture against the background of agricultural mechanization during the 1950s and 1960s. In some ways representative and in other ways unique, Toshié's narrative raises questions about conventional frameworks of twentieth-century Japanese history, and about the place of individual agency and choice in an era often seen as dominated by the impersonal forces of modernity: technology, state power, and capitalism.

A well-written history of rural life in 20th century Japan
By Bryan L
In his book "Toshie", Simon Partner provides a detailed account of village life throughout 20th century Japan. The historical and sociological information is carefully selected; each piece deepens the reader's understanding of the life of Toshie and her fellow villagers. Partner's observations on World War II, village life, and the rise of consumer culture in Japan are all welcome additions to the study of Japanese history. The real strength of the book, however, is Partner's vivid descriptions. From the beginning, one feels as if they are looking over the shoulder of the midwife during the birth of the protagonist, Toshie. These fine descriptions continue throughout the book and one can nearly breathe the fresh village air or sweat alongside the farmers and laborers as they toil into the night.
For anyone who is interested in Japanese history, village life, or simply looking for a good read, I highly reccomend this book.

Best Book on Village Life in Japan
By G. Doi
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. I am a third generation Japanese American(sansei) born and raised in Hawaii. My grandparents came here from Niigata ken, which is the setting of the book, around the turn of the 20th century. They came as laborers to work in the sugar plantations. Therefore I found the details about village life in Niigata very relevant to their experiences in America.
I have read many accouns of life in the Japanese countryside through the years ("Shinohata", "Village Japan", and "A Far Valley" come to mind). But Partner's book is the best I have read because of the combination of historical and sociological data. It is also filled with sensitivity to the lives of Toshie and others in her village.
I recently visited Niigata for the first time. Of course, spending two days there as a tourist did not give me as much of an in-depth look as I would have liked. But I will go back again, partly because Partner's work has increased my level of awareness.

From Publishers Weekly
In this tongue-in-cheek manual, mechanical illustrations--complete with levers, pipes and springs--fancifully, if not always hilariously, clarify dogs' inner workings. Snow's ( The Monster Book of ABC Sounds ) dry, witty remarks supplement illustrations including a stem-to-stern cross-section of an all-purpose breed that exposes a network of sensors and tubing. Here, a tiny thermometer and fan are shown to power a dog's nose, a microphone is seen to occupy each ear and a front-loading washing machine depicts the stomach. One particularly, ahem, tricky area receives the innocuous label "waste disposal." Neatly hand-printed text advances the blueprint effect, and later pages explore "general maintenance" of the dog (although a warning reminds owners to "please refer servicing . . . to a qualified expert"). Despite the well-planned diagrams and agreeable drawings of grinning pets, the clinical, deadpan humor sometimes falls flat, and the concept of animal-as-machine seems contradicted by the presence of mini-pups that apparently monitor the canine controls. Clever as Snow's idea is, his execution falls short of its potential. Ages 4-8.

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. Defining a dog as a "four-legged animal that eats, sleeps, runs around, and smells when wet" and whose ears "can hear food from half a mile away, but cannot hear `NO' from three feet," Snow speaks with a sarcasm born of love. Humorous pen-and-ink art and tidy, hand-printed type diagram a canine's inner workings to resemble a mad scientist's laboratory: funnels, gears, cogs, bolts, tubing, and switches are held together by string and luck and operated by little dogs within the big one. Equipped with a table of contents and an index to further mimic scholarly resources, this spoof of how-to-understand-and-manage-a-dog manuals will bring laughs of understanding to dog lovers, young and old. Ellen Mandel

From Kirkus Reviews
Cutaway cartoons reveal that the Dog is really filled with levers, pistons, tubes, vats, memory banks, sniff motors, and waste disposal plumbing. A straight-faced narrative explains: ``...legs are attached at the four corners of the main body'' and ``As trainees vets...learn to take dogs apart.'' Funny? Stupid? It depends: some will find this labored and boring; others-- particularly young ones--should find it hilarious, especially the spritely, cartoon-style illustrations detailing the bizarre workings of the canine's fantastical innards. 4 1/2* Fun Illustrations, but Lacks Warmth
By M. Allen Greenbaum
According to Alan Snow, dogs are complex mechanical animals, composed of pipes, wheels, funnels, bolts, and other hardware store parts. Snow's brightly colored drawings (except for the black and white picture on pp. 10-11) show cutaways of the dog's inner workings, including a telescope (eyes), microphones (ears), and something resembling a washing machine/bank vault to represent the stomach. All of this is very funny and creative on first viewing. He uses computer analogies to explain higher functions like memory: "All dogs, even the boring ones, have some sort of brain..." "All the information that goes into the brain is compared with the information that is already there (called memories)." In the "stored information" section of the dog, the cutaway reveals a bulletin board with tacked-on pictures ("visual memory") and bottles containing a boot, a sausage, and a treat ("smell memory"). Several small internal dogs operate the various levers and gadgets that control the mechanical beast we know as a dog. (This begs the question of what operates the inner dogs, but Snow lets that one go).

Obviously, this imaginative book is strictly for fun, and Snow's illustrations, short answers (e.g., "what happens when the eyes pick up an image of another dog") and guides (e.g., General Maintenance") are humorous and sometimes even instructive. However, the book's mechanistic approach is sometimes off-putting as well. Snow sometimes refers to the dog as an "it," and this construct is reinforced throughout the book. In one two-page section, a vet opens up a sick dog as if the latter were simply a bad engine (screwdrivers and drill parts surround the upside-down canine). Neither the eyes of the vet nor of the dog are shown, and each lacks a basic humanity or "caninity," respectively. Snow opens up the laboratory-like feeling of the book by showing a dog playing, eating, chasing, and exploring around a house, but the basic social nature of the dog is ignored. Other sections of the book just don't feel right. The text for the diagram (that's what the pictures feel like) of the dog viewing an apparently frightened "other" dog reads, "Do I know this dog? Yes. His name is Fang, and he is my friend." The humor around dogs' independence is usually reserved for cats, and the food-centered nature of the dog is nothing new-even if the illustrations are creative.

As clever as the concept, and as well drawn the execution (this book won the New York Times Book Review title for "Best Illustrated Children's Book), the book lacks a certain warmth; you get the feeling that Snow doesn't own a dog. After the initial satisfaction at seeing the bright, creative schematics, the dense text and complex pictures become almost taxing. Occasionally, Snow takes a break from this formula, and his page about how dogs and owners come to resemble each other ("A pretty pampered dog will make its owner feel ugly and inferior. Result-the owner will rush off to the beauty salon.") succeeds well, and is the only illustration showing dogs and humans enjoying each other.

I think little kids will enjoy the pictures and older kids will enjoy the obvious nonsense of it all, but the book could have "strayed" a bit more from its basic premise. One could also view this book as a satire on kids' last-minute grade school reports, but Snow didn't take this route. Snow's book is big, colorful, and inventive, but the reliance on the mechanical humor takes away some of the personality and warmth it might have had.

Hilarious- and not just for little kids!
By A Customer
I first read this book as a little kid- and I still like it now. The idea of dogs being machines is a great one, and little details in the drawing make it seem real (in a wacky way). A good book for younger kids, or any one with a love for dogs and a sense of humor.

This is a book for older kids and adults too!
By A Customer
This is by far the best picture book I have ever read in my life. Alan uses such a great sense of humor, and the pictures are wonderful. My mom and I always used to spend extra time after washing our dog so we could read this book. When I got it for Christmas, my Aunt and Grandma liked it too! How Dogs Really Work is a book for people of all ages, I even gave it to my cat-loving friend!
