Lebanese immigrants to the US settle near Boston, leaving memories and cousins behind in Lebanon. This is the story of family members (grandmother Emilie, her son, George, his wife, Salma, their daughter Marie, and George's sister Josephine) who keep their ties to Lebanon. The novel chronicles the characters' thoughts and actions as they wait at home during a snowstorm for their cousin, Eve, to arrive from Lebanon after fifteen years of separation. Added to the mix are the connections they make with their eccentric neighbor whom they have named "Loom," whose own family ties propel him along inexplicable paths.

Chehade's literary style in this, her first book effort, starts off shakily as she fails to identify characters or repeats herself unnecessarily, but about a third of the way through, her voice emerges as strong and as resilient as her characters. As Chehade chronicles the effects of the unbalanced feeling of being of one culture and trying to assimilate into another, her prose makes each character stand out as an individual, while all the characters attempt to negotiate the dynamics of their unbalanced relationships with each other and with their neighbor, Loom. Chehade weaves a sense of place, memories of the past, emotional connections to both the old and the new, and characterization to make us understand the difficulties of emigrating to a new world, itself in the midst of rebirth after the events of September 11, 2001.

Extremely disappointed

I was looking for a book that covered Machine Learning from a practical, hands on perspective, and the "Practical Machine Learning" title certainly looked promising. Unfortunately, the only thing practical I could find in this book was the title.

I read the first five chapters and stopped; it was a huge waste of my time and my money. The book merely scratches the surface of the real topics; on the other hand, it spends a considerable amount of pages covering instructions on how to download and install software packges like Hadoop, R, Julia, etc. Most of the instructions are a poor copy and paste job from the original web sites. I don't need an entire chapter explaining how to install Hadoop - the Apache/Hadoop site has better instructions that are specific to my target operating system.

The illustrations are laughable, to say the least - very naive diagrams that were probably put together by someone who just learned how to use Power Point. They do nothing to explain concepts.

There is also quite a bit of material about ML tools that looks like it was extracted directly from the original web sites. I was looking for concrete problems, formulae, algorithms, code, etc. Couldn't find any.

Bottom line, this is a huge and expensive copy and paste scam. Stay away from it.

Good coverage on wide scope of algorithms with source code

Thoroughly impressed by the structure of the book and the way the algorithms are introduced from the concept to application. The only book that explores 5 different frameworks for implementing machine learning. Additionally, a detailed information on the code snippets in addition to the code documentation would have been a fantastic bonus to the content.

Keep looking for something better

NOTE: I haven't bought the book through Amazon. This is a review I made after learning ML using this book as reference.

I used this book to get introduced into the Machine Learning world. If you want a theoric guide, this book is totally recommended. The examples explained here are good enough for a beginner (you will need to look further for more definitions, though) and are pretty clear. Here, I would put 4 stars because it isn't the best guide out there.

Well, now, the reason why I reduced its rating comes in the part of configuration and code. I am using a Linux distro, so some instructions were clear. But the problem is that when configuring Hadoop and Mahout, the instructions were made by different people, so there were unclear or done steps. Ok, this is tolerable, even though it is a bad practice.

But after chapter 5, where the code examples are important, comes the nightmare. I tested the R examples of forests and few issues about importing some required libraries appeared. Ok, no problems here, just download and import it. But when I tried the rest, I only got errors. Reading the Python code, it was referencing local files from the author's computer, using deprecated functions from Scikit-learn and the code was pretty unclear to at least fix the problem. Until now I learned how to use Mahout on Eclipse (an IDE that I despise so much, but at least has a "good" integration with Maven), but still, the project has too many errors that are unclear for me, even looking through another sources. I lost too much time doing this, which I think it is not fair.

So I gave up and tried another books and sources. This book at least give a nice introduction to what kind of problems ML tries to solve, but after that, do not keep reading.

Wife Takes Control of Her Marriage, and Turns Her Husband into a 1950's Housewife...

Before Mel and Diane get married, she lays out for him precisely what she expects from him as her partner. Some of her terms seem ridiculous, but he wants them to be together so he agrees. He's hopeful that many of the specifics she'd talked about represent fantasies of hers that will never actually be put into practice. He's quite mistaken.

Diane reminds Mel of his promises to her, and he assures her that he'd meant every word, although he'd hoped that some of what she'd alluded to would never be put into practice. He assures her that he'll keep his word, though, and that assurance is all that Diane needs to proceed with her plans. Initially, all that she asks is that he lets her make all of the decisions, and that he quit his job.

Soon he's completely reliant on Diane financially, his credit cards cancelled, and doing the cooking, cleaning, and laundry while she's at work. Step by step, Mel's surrender to his wife soon has his sweatpants replaced with corset, stockings, heels, and dresses. Mel hates what is happening to him, except for the small part of him that's tenting the front of his panties. Also, as mentioned above, cuckolding is alluded to, but relegated to a future chapter of the story. Despite that, it's still satisfying, and I look forward to reading Part Two.

Hardcore accounting principles for US restaurants

Lets get the easy bit out of the way. This is NOT
- a memoir about someone's time working in a kitchen (Bourdain for the rough edge Kitchen Confidential Updated Edition: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (P.S.), or Achatz' Life, on the Line: A Chef's Story of Chasing Greatness, Facing Death, and Redefining the Way We Eat for the esthetic side , )
- a book detailing how service should be delivered ('... the knife should then be placed 1" in from the edge of the table...' etc aka what Professional Table Service covers ad nauseam )
- a book covering people management in the biz as well as the industry (look at the Taffer book Raise the Bar: An Action-Based Method for Maximum Customer Reactions and Spike TV series for that or Restaurant Owners Uncorked Restaurant Owners Uncorked: Twenty Owners Share Their Recipes for Success)

And again, even if you have a part time bookkeeper, you MUST know what questions to ask and how to drill down in the figures they create for you!

P.S. Fields' Restaurant Success by the Numbers: A Money-Guy's Guide to Opening the Next Hot Spot is another view of how to understand the figures. personally I'd suggest that as an introduction, but would STRONGLY suggest you use the chart of accounts (COA) and number layouts given in the USAR over Fields' version

Due to the nature of the business, slight differences in margins can add up substantially. It's important to know what you're talking about when you sit down with your accountant.

Beautiful, but superficial with factual errors

This is a magnificent book. I have never seen diamonds and aquamarines look so beautiful. The photography is great and it is a noble effort. However, I was surprised to find a number of serious mistakes in the book. For example, Olga did not travel to Yekaterinburg with her parents, it was Maria. I found a dozen errors like this, it wasn't a pleasant experience, I wanted the book to be better. The book also is ignorant of many important facts regarding Alexandra, her jewels and their fate. I would say buy the book for the pictures. Let us hope that someday we'll get a great book on Alexandra and her jewels. This is not it.

more of a memoir

This lovely book is read more as a memoir than a jewelry book. Many photos are of jewels that were destroyed or lost, so the book also act as an archive of these wonderful creations. The text is very well done but with so many Marias, Alexandras and the complicated system for russian last names, a genealogical tree or guide would have been so welcomed (next edition maybe). If you love russian history or jewelry, a great addition for your library.

Both stunning and dissapointing

This is a lovely book to look at and the author has unearthed some very rare photos you only normally see in low quality on the internet along with pieces sold long ago at obscure auctions for our viewing pleasure. Having said that I found this book somewhat disappointing. Given the topic there's some unavoidable cross over with the contents of Jewels of the Tsars: The Romanovs and Imperial Russia, which is another visual treat. The author has also matched up photos of people wearing their jewels to sold pieces that is very interesting and lacking in "Jewels of the Tsars" on a scale such as this.

What it is missing though is a full list of the jewels sold in 1927 and those taken into exile with the imperial family. To get the 1927 list you have to get A History of the Crown Jewels of Europe which is both rare and expensive or for the jewels in exile The Fate of the Romanovswhere the list is available as an appendix. The lack of this hard, useful information for those researching Russian imperial jewels will make this book of mostly visual use in the future rather than the last word on the subject. One other glaring omission in both of these books is a lack of photos of the jeweled badges the ladies in waiting wore for each empress. These are distinctly Russian pieces of jewellery, and while odd examples are shown neither book goes into them in any detail which is a great pity.

The text is 90% recounting of the biographies of various members of the imperial family and friends lives. I suspect a full family tree would be useful for those not familiar with the Romanovs. The majority of the information about the jewels themselves is to be found in the captions for the pictures and for me that made this a somewhat odd book, but one which nevertheless will have it's place on my bookshelf.

Malcolm Sherrington

Malcolm Sherrington has been working in computing for over 35 years. He holds degrees in mathematics, chemistry, and engineering and has given lectures at two different universities in the UK as well as worked in the aerospace and healthcare industries. Currently, he is running his own company in the finance sector, with specific interests in High Performance Computing and applications of GPUs and parallelism. Always hands-on, Malcolm started programming scientific problems in Fortran and C, progressing through Ada and Common Lisp, and recently became involved with data processing and analytics in Perl, Python, and R. Malcolm is the organizer of the London Julia User Group. In addition, he is a co-organizer of the UK High Performance Computing and the financial engineers and Quant London meetup groups.

Nice overview

Julia is growing fast among scientist and slowly getting closer to Python for scientific computing. Its syntax, speed and powerful type system allow for fast and very readable code. The downside is that one has to change paradigm and the way to think about the code, and here is where this book could be very useful, giving a nice panoramic of the language and showing how to restyle your code
